What does it mean to be ISO certified and why does it matter?

ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization which, according to the ISO website, “is the world’s largest developer of voluntary International Standards. International Standards give state of the art specifications for products, services and good practice, helping to make industry more efficient and effective. Developed through global consensus, they help to break down barriers to international trade.” Although ISO is the body that develops the rules by which certification is granted, they do not do the certifications themselves. Companies become ISO certified after having a certification performed by an external ISO certification body.
